Winmx reached it's peek during March 2005, when it was used in more US households than any other P2P program. But than Winmx began to decline in popularity. One of the problems leading to this was the increase presence of "dummy" files, reportedly placed by those who were against file sharing. During September 2005 the RIAA demanded that Winmx place filters to make it impossible for users to download copyrighted material, or shut down. A week later, Under the threat of litigation, the network was offline.A short time later Winmx was operationa again thanks to several patches identified by users.
